The fifth Pirates movie is still a ways off of its July 2017 release date, but that hasn’t stopped new Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales plot and casting information from being released by the studio. Production has just begun for directors Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, and along with that has come some new casting details as well as an official synopsis.
Familiar faces in the film will includes Pirates of the Caribbean regulars Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, and Orlando Bloom. Also announced alongside of them will be Exodus: Gods and Kings star Golshifteh Farahani, who will be playing an as-of-yet unknown role. Javier Bardem of No Country For Old Men will also be joining the crew as Jack Sparrow’s old nemisis, “the terrifying Captain Salazar.”
A new synopsis was also revealed Tuesday, which gives us our first look into the next adventures of Jack Sparrow and everyone else who is not Johnny Depp:
Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea, including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas
All told, the Pirates franchise has made over $1.2 billion in box office revenue alone for Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer since the first film released in 2003. The last movie, On Stranger Tides, was the weakest of the bunch, both critically and at the box office. It made “only” $241 million when it was released in 2011, down from the series’ peak Dead Man’s Chest, which took in $423.3 million in 2006.
The six-year gap between On Stranger Tides and Dead Men Tell No Tales will be the longest of the series by far. The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) was followed up by Dead Man’s Chest three years later in 2006, which was then followed merely a year later by At World’s End in 2007. Lastly was On Strangers Tides in 2011. The latter two films were panned by critics but still manged to rake in huge sums of money.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and is expected to release on July 7, 2017.
