One of the ways that Sesame Street has stayed relevant for all these years is keeping up with pop culture trends and putting their own puppet spin on it. They’ve done it with House of Cards, 30 Rock, Lord of the Rings, and many more. The latest effort is a Sesame Street Game of Thrones parody titled “Game of Chairs.”
The Game of Chairs will determine who will be king or queen of Jesteros. Four players will march around three chairs while music plays until one remains. Who will take the crown in this game of musical chairs? Robb, Cersie, Joffrey, Daeneyrus or….?
The skit does a good job avoiding spoilers if you don’t know what to look for by slipping in seemingly innocuous phrases into the dialogue – like Grover’s one-liners after every character is eliminated (“Sorry it looks like you choked, Joffrey”). It even goes all-out with the intro and re-creates it almost shot-for-shot with chairs replacing the various castles from the original.
While George R.R. Martin and Game of Thrones showrunner David Benioff did confirm that the HBO series will begin deviating from the A Song of Ice and Fire books, I don’t think anyone was expecting Grover to ascend to the throne. We’ll find out if that’s really the case when Game of Thrones returns this Sunday in its usual 9 PM EST time slot.
