For Windows Phone fans in the US it looks like Microsoft will be offering the Lumia 640 on T-Mobile very soon. Our own Jason Bouwmeester had the chance to review the Lumia 640XL and rated it quite highly. The 640XL has a large screen without the large price and we liked it very much. While the 640 is slightly smaller, it still has the same 720p screen that the 640XL has and is expected to be priced very reasonably (supposedly $89 off contract) but no official price from T-Mobile. It might seem strange that Microsoft would have used the same 720p screen in the XL as its smaller sibling but they had a good reason.
When we spoke to Microsoft earlier this year at Mobile World Congress they were very clear that the 640 line was not intended to be a flagship Lumia line. This is why they left a 720p display on the larger phone, it kept the costs down which in turn kept the retail price down. Without divulging any information Microsoft told us that in order to stay true to the “flagship” identity, they want to work on making it right the first time. When they introduced the 640XL I was certain it was going to be their flagship device but they are clear that it is not.
There was no indication as to when a Lumia flagship would be introduced, only that the company has plans and wants to produce a flagship that is worthy of the moniker. So T-Mobile Windows Phone users will have to settle for the 640 for now. It would have been nice to see the 640XL as an offering but perhaps we’ll see a Lumia flagship sooner than later. This also could be a “testing the waters” moment for Microsoft and Lumia to see how well the 640 is received at T-Mobile. Windows Phones are rarely seen at retail outlets and maybe Microsoft is taking baby steps back in. What do you think of the 640 series from Microsoft?
