Tony Todd cast as Zoom in Season 2 of The Flash

The retelling of The Flash continues on The CW, as Tony Todd is cast as Zoom in Season 2, apparently to clash with Barry Allen in the TV series as opposed to Wally West (the third Flash) from comic book canon. Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine fans might remember Tony Todd and his iconic deep-throated voice as Kurn (Worf’s brother an onetime member of the Klingon High Council) and as an adult Jake Sisko from an alternate timeline. Star Trek: Voyager fans might also remember him as an Alpha Hirogen.

In case you’re not fully versed in The Flash villains from comic book canon, Zoom is essentially another Reverse-Flash but with a different background. In the comics (as described by Wikipedia), Hunter Zolomon is paralyzed from the waist down during a prison break from Iron Heights by Gorilla Grodd and asks his close friend Wally West to allow him use of a time-travel device to return to the past and prevent his injury. When West refuses and Zolomon tries to use the device without permission, the resulting accident gives him the ability to make himself appear to have super speed by tampering with the flow of linear time. Meanwhile, his resentment at West’s refusal (as he sees it) to help a friend in need sends him on his villainous course.

Of course, it remains to be seen how Zoom’s background and current circumstances will be portrayed on the small screen, but you won’t have to wait long as he is scheduled to appear in the second episode (October 13) of the season. Todd’s role will apparently be voice-only, as quotes from executive producer Andrew Kreisberg’s interview with Variety magazine:

Last year, with the Reverse-Flash, we just modulated Tom Cavanagh’s voice, and this year we wanted to do something a little bit different…

Part of the mystery of the season is who or what is underneath the Zoom outfit, and so we wanted to do something like James Earl Jones as Darth Vader — this iconic voice coming out of this mask. Last year, we thought of the Reverse-Flash as a speed warrior; this year, Zoom is like a speed demon, and no one does demon-voice better than Tony Todd.

The Zoom outfit is much more organic than the Reverse-Flash suit. In a way, it’s hard to tell if it is a suit or alive… There’s no skin showing, for all you know there’s a robot underneath, or dark energy.

It will be interesting, to say the least, how The CW develops this character in Season 2. Are you looking forward to The Flash returning? Please let us know in the comments!
