That’s right, I said sequels, as in more than one. Ultimately it looks like Director George Miller is looking for Mad Max to join the elite of movie franchises and become both a reboot and a trilogy. Due to the abnormally long pre-production time frame, Miller ended up with enough extra story for two different scripts. Miller explained all of the unfortunate events that hindered the filming in an interview with TopGear:
[Fury Road] was green lit three times and fell over three times over a decade. We went to shoot with Mel Gibson back in 2001, but then 9/11 happened, and the American dollar collapsed against the Australian dollar close to 30 per cent, so we lost that amount of budget overnight. Then we were then rained out of Australia. The desert rained for the first time in 15 years, and we ended up in South West Africa, Namibia. But in this process, we had dug down deep into the backstory, not only of the characters, but of every vehicle. How the steering wheels became religious artefacts and things like that. So we ended up with two scripts, without really trying.
According to Miller, he is in talks with Warner Bros studio about which film will be the next
installment but nothing has gotten the green light from the studio yet. Two titles have surfaced which might be a clue as to what direction the scripts could go with Mad Max: Furiosa being one and Mad Max: Wasteland being the second.
With Mad Max raking in almost $375 million dollars ($154 million domestically and $221 million abroad), a sequel is surely in our future at some point. Miller has even stated he wants to return to the barren lands but is looking for a much smaller film for the immediate future.
I want to do a small film without special effects before I do any of that, just to do it quickly. We shot Fury Road for eight months… that’s a lot. Every day in the heat and the dust, doing these stunts, it’s very wearing. We’ve got two more planned, but at some point in the future.
While there is no official timeline for the sequels, they are sure to have even more chrome, more cars, and more Max (Spoiler: Hardy is contracted for at least 3 more films!). Whether or not Charlize Theron will reprise her role as Furiosa remains to be seen. Needless to say, we are very much looking forward to THE GATES OF VALHALLA!
