[UPDATED] The Woz Wants Apple To Build An Android Phone

While at the APPS World North America conference in San Francisco, Steve “The Woz” Wozniak talked with WIRED about a number of things, including Apple building an Android phone. The Woz is famously known as the co-founder of Apple Computers where he ushered in a variety of innovative tech. His role was overshadowed by the marketing genius of Steve Jobs but The Woz is more loved and respected in the geek/tech community than Steve Jobs ever was. Wozniak is known to use both Android and iOS and he has in the past complimented and praised Google for making a great operating system.

UPDATE (6/16/2016 07:50ET): It seems this source is old folks, sorry for the excitement hope we didn’t cause too much of a squall.

“There’s nothing that would keep Apple out of the Android market as a secondary phone market,” said Wozniak–who, it should be noted, is no longer involved in the day-to-day workings of the company. “We could compete very well. People like the precious looks of stylings and manufacturing that we do in our product compared to the other Android offerings. We could play in two arenas at the same time.”

“The great products really come from secret development,” he said. “You put small teams of great people on them and they aren’t bothered by other people commenting on what they’re doing while they’re doing it. A whole new category of products doesn’t happen very often. It might happen once a decade. Sometimes you have to wait for one of those to come about.”

Apple has operated a closed system since Steve Jobs took Apple back in the late 90’s and that’s exactly how Jobs wanted it. Keep control of the ecosystem and don’t let anyone bug with it because the user doesn’t know what they want until we tell them. For the most part that has worked and there are many users who would rather have it that way, there’s a freedom to some in not having to think about how or why your device works. But for many others, Android is the preferred choice because it allows that freedom to explore the device and its operating system. We know Android is here to stay for awhile and its taken a good chunk of users from iOS, so why not build and tap into the competitions ecosystem?

Do we want this to happen? The Woz does, and we do too. Do we think this will happen? Likely not any time soon if ever, but it is fun to think about. What do you think of The Woz suggesting Apple build an Android Phone? Let us know in the comments below or on Twitter, Facebook and Google+.
