Darth Vader confirmed to appear in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy was asked asked about what existing characters might make an appearance in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. She responded with what could possibly be the greatest confirmation ever:

I think we can talk about Vader…

With just those few simple words, Star Wars fans can get excited about Rogue One all over again. To get the rest of the super-exciting news out of the way up front: James Earl Jones will be reprising his role as the voice of the Sith lord. No official word has been given regarding the actor behind the mask, only that several “large framed” performers will don the suit — hey Disney/Lucasfilm, where can I sign up?

The Sith lord that we see, however, will differ somewhat from the overarching presence that he had in the original trilogy. Vader will appear in Rogue One,  but only just a little bit. While Vader is obviously a powerful enforcer for the Empire, many in the rebellion have not yet heard of him. He’s more of an idea, or a boogie man at this point in the story. Director Gareth Edwards described Vader’s role in Rogue One as more of a legend at this point:

Within the Rebellion, it’s not commonly spoken about. Within the Empire, there is the culture of knowing of the existence of Darth Vader. There’s definitely an underlying feeling that there is a power – a dark power – available to the Empire and that if you overstep your mark, you will suffer the consequences.

The main antagonist duties in Rogue One will fall to others, which we won’t discuss at the risk of spoiling anything. Just note that the source link below does have quite a lot more information, though some of that information includes some minor spoilers for the upcoming movie.
