Pokémon GO exploration leads to found body in Wyoming

With a launch this week, Pokémon GO exploration had many out into the world trying to be the very best, but one girl got more than she was expecting. While playing the AR game, a 19-year-old female in Riverton, Wyoming, came upon a dead body.

In an interview with BuzzFeed news, Shayla Wiggins happened upon the body after taking a walk along the Big Wind River while trying to find Pokémons to catch in Pokémon GO.

“As I looked one way, I noticed that there was something in the water in front of me,” she said. “And so I took a closer look and saw it was a body.”

Following the discovery, Wiggins phoned 911. The Freemont County Sheriff’s Office released an official statement to KCWY News 13 later that day. Here’s what it had to say:

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an adult male who was located in the Big Wind River under the Wyoming Highway 789 Bridge this morning around 8:40AM. The body was discovered by local resident who was walking in the immediate area.

“The death appears to be accidental in nature and possibly that of a drowning. There is no evidence at this time that would indicate foul play. Evidence located at the scene has led investigators to believe the man went into the water at the location he was found.”

The body was located in about three feet of water on the east side of the Wind River Bridge. The County Sheriff is leading the investigation with assistance from the FBI as well as the Riverton Police Department. The area in which the body was located is situated near the convergence of three jurisdictional boundaries and was determined to be just inside the primary jurisdiction of the Sheriff.

The body was removed from the water with assistance of the Riverton Fire Department and Fremont County Search and Rescue. The Fremont County Coroner’s Office is attempting to make a positive identification and will be conducting an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

“At this time the investigation is ongoing. Further details as to the circumstances surrounding the death will be released after preliminary autopsy results are received and we have a clearer picture of what occurred.”

So while the death may have been accidental, it certainly could rattle someone’s day regardless. It just goes to show that while it’s good to get out for some old fashioned Pokémon GO exploration, you never know what you’ll happen to stumble onto.

For a fledgling game plagued by launch issues, this is certainly a weird circumstance to be tied to it. Have you been able to play Pokémon GO yet? Let us know in the comments below or on Google+, Twitter, or Facebook.
