We’re just hours away from Apple’s October event where it is highly anticipated they will introduce new MacBooks and MacBook Pros. One of the features that is expected to be part of this refresh is the so-called Magic Toolbar. The Magic Toolbar is expected to be an OLED remappable bar that sits where the function keys once were. This new Magic Toolbar was rumored to possibly be made of E Ink technology but it’s looking more like it will be OLED. MacRumors got ahold of these images that seem to confirm an OLED display, but also seem to confirm my speculation that the new keyboard would also have the butterfly keys not the traditional MacBook Pro keys.
These days I’m more inclined to believe that these leaks aren’t really leaks but well placed marketing — but I digress. As you can see from the photo above it looks like the speaker grills have been trimmed down from previous generations and I think that’s to make room for the butterfly keyboard. The keys on that keyboard are a bit wider than the traditional Mac keyboard and need that extra space. Curiously though, the MacBook Pro branding is shown on the front panel, something Apple had been leaving off in the past but may be bringing back.
The Magic Toolbar shown in this photo appears to have TouchID integration so you can use Apple Pay on websites that will support it. Overall I think this is basically what we’re going to see at the Apple event but we’re also hoping for some changes to the rest of the chassis. Unless we get more “leaks” we’ll have to wait to see what the rest of the MacBook looks like.
