The new Tesla electric tractor trailer was unveiled last week and it’s certainly a sight to behold. While I was initially interested in the trailer news, I admittedly got distracted by the Tesla Roadster 2. Now that my goo-goo eyes are refocused we can talk about the Tesla electric tractor trailer. The big news of the day is that Walmart has already pre-ordered 15 of these beasts which is a big win for Tesla. Not only has Walmart thrown money at Tesla but J.B. Hunt has also invested in an unknown number of the trucks.

Walmart says five of the trucks will be for the U.S. market and the other ten for the Canadian market. They plan on initially testing them which could lead to a bigger order down the road. Walmart has a fleet of 6,000 trucks at the moment so you do the math.

“We have a long history of testing new technology – including alternative-fuel trucks – and we are excited to be among the first to pilot this new heavy-duty electric vehicle,” the company said in a statement to CNBC.

“We believe we can learn how this technology performs within our supply chain, as well as how it could help us meet some of our long-term sustainability goals, such as lowering emissions.”

The Tesla electric tractor trailer boasts a 0-60mph (with 80K lbs load) of 20 seconds. Here are a few more specs on this beast:

  • Acceleration 0-60 mph with 80k lbs: 20 sec
  • Speed up a 5% Grade: 65 mph
  • Mile Range: 300 or 500 miles
  • Powertrain: 4 Independent Motors on Rear Axles
  • Energy Consumption: Less than 2 kWh / mile
  • Fuel Savings: $200,000+

Obviously, these vehicles are made for industry and not consumer use but their success could lead to lower pricing on the Model S, Model 3 and other future consumer Tesla vehicles. We shall see.
