The internet is a vast trove of information and global connectivity but there are frustrating bits too, like adult content spam. Social media is one place that adult spam likes to fester and Google+ seems to be the latest target. Yes, Google+. I know many of you have written off Google+ as just another failed Google experiment and that’s fine. I mean, even I have questioned if Google has abandoned the platform. But for those of us who still use the platform, it has much to offer in terms of social interaction.
Google+ isn’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination. But it has been valuable for me in finding friends who are like-minded in many ways. I’ve been on Google+ since the first few days of its launch and I continue to stick with it. Even through the countless declarations of its demise and downfall. Even through its changing of management, format, and design. I stick with it. Not because of Google but because of the people who continue to use Google+.
We keep getting reassured that Google is not abandoning Google+ and we sure hope that is true. But lately, it seems the interest in keeping spambot accounts off the platform isn’t on the priority list. Particularly adult spam and the fake accounts posting spam comments. The problem has intensified for our own personal accounts as well as the Techaeris account. We spend far too much time reporting, deleting and blocking these adult spam comments than we should be and it has even caused one of our writers to write off the platform for the short term.
As a result, we’ve now resorted to disabling comments on the Techaeris Google+ account because it is simply too much work to keep up with these fake accounts. Below are just a few — blurred out — examples of the mess that is being posted.
Hey Google, we know it takes a lot of work to police a social network but it seems you might be too busy getting donuts instead lately. We’re just asking you to do better. This problem is probably not affecting every user on the platform but we’ve been hearing more complaints about adult spam. Talk to your community and let them know what exactly you’re doing to prevent the heavy influx of such comments and fake accounts. Or just tell us if you’re just not interested in supporting the platform much longer. There’s still a large user base that is rooting for the platform to live, don’t leave them hanging.
