Razer made a pretty big splash when it released its gaming-centric Razer Phone last year. There are a few companies rumoured to be working on similar devices but the first out of the gate is the Xiaomi liquid-cooled Black Shark gaming phone.

The Xiaomi Black Shark definitely brings it on the specification front with a 5.99″ 2160 x 1080 display with an 18:9 aspect ratio, 550 nit brightness, 1500:1 contrast ratio, and 97% color gamut coverage. The device is powered by a Snapdragon 845 processor and 6 or 8GB of RAM, depending on the model. The 6GB version will also sport 64GB of storage while the 8GB will have 128GB of storage. Unfortunately, the Black Shark doesn’t feature 120Hz refresh rate on the screen but does have another trick up its sleeve: liquid cooling to keep the device cooler while gaming. According to Xiaomi, this system allows the phone to run a full 8ºC cooler so you shouldn’t have to worry about CPU throttling while gaming due to overheating.

Other features of the Black Shark include a 4,000 mAh battery (a must have for CPU intensive games for longer battery life), BT 4, 12MP rear dual-camera, a 20MP front camera, and an optional game controller which attaches to the bottom of the phone via the USB Type-C port. The game controller costs an additional ¥179 (~$28USD).

The Xiaomi Black Shark is available in black or grey for ¥2999 (~$477USD) for the 6GB/64GB configuration or ¥3499 (~$557USD) for the 8GB/128GB configuration — considerably cheaper than the $699.99USD Razer Phone. Unfortunately, at this time, it appears that the device is slated for a China release only.
