God of War is obviously a well known franchise, and has done quite well for Sony and its PlayStation systems starting with its first foray on the PlayStation 2. With sequels spanning the PS2, PS3, and PSP systems, Kratos has already had a good run on Sony hardware. The newly released God of War for PlayStation 4 was recently released and aside from seeing near perfect review scores, it has one more item to boast about. Selling 3.1 million copies in its first 3 days on sale, God of War has become the fastest-selling PlayStation 4 exclusive game.
Yes, there are games that have sold more copies more quickly, including Grand Theft Auto V, which sold a staggering 11.2 million copies on launch day. That is, of course, a multi-platform game, which helps spread out the numbers a bit, but it’s still definitely an impressive number.
As for PlayStation 4 exclusives, God of War has bested several excellent games. Uncharted 4 sold 2.7 million copies in a week, while Horizon: Zero Dawn sold 2.6 million copies in two weeks. I haven’t played Uncharted yet (it’s on my list, I swear), and while I didn’t buy Horizon immediately at launch, it was the game that pushed me into PlayStation 4 ownership and was an amazing, amazing game.
God of War has a bit longer track record than either of those games, so its success isn’t such a big surprise. What may have been more surprising is just how good it is. I’m not too far into the game yet, though what I’ve played so far is beautiful, plays incredibly well, and offers an amazing story. So far it has definitely earned the praise that has been heaped upon it.
