[Rumor] Microsoft may be making an Android powered smartphone

This is an interesting way to kick off the weekend: a hybrid Microsoft and Android rumor. Supposedly, Microsoft may be making their very own Android OS smartphone. What follows below is a text conversation between a journalist and Microsoft representative. The question that kicked off the conversation was in regards to Lumia smartphones. Then the Microsoft representative said this:

No worries. I’ll be more than happy to assist you with your concern. 🙂 Our Windows phone engineers are focusing on releasing a new model. However it’s not yet announce what type of models they’re gonna create or release.

That was certainly a bit more information than the journalist really needed. But it does show that Microsoft is at least working on a new mobile device. I think that news alone is going to make plenty of people happy. But the conversation didn’t end there, as the journalist probed and the representative gave up more information. The meat of the text messages in the assertion that Microsoft will not be using a Windows OS on this new phone. Rather, they will indeed be using Android, made by Google.

Given that Windows Phone seems to be dead and that Microsoft currently sells Android phones in store, I think this rumor may hold some weight.

Have a look at the text conversation below, names redacted.

As with any rumors reported anywhere, take it with a grain of salt until we get solid proof. Until then, feel free to speculate on if this is even something Microsoft would even think of doing. Windows Phone was a pretty nice OS but had very little developer support. At least with Android, Microsoft hardware would have a chance again.

So, here’s the question. With people wanting a Surface Phone. And how cool would that be? Do you think Microsoft will produce an Android-powered smartphone? Do you think they’ll still sell a Surface Phone with a Microsoft OS on it? Let us know in the comments below or on Google+, Twitter, or Facebook.
