The Dutch operation of Uber used to have a minimum driver age of 18. That is until recently. The company is now raising the minimum driver age to 21 in the Netherlands after several accidents where people lost their lives. The company is also pledging to increase its road safety program by requiring drivers be licensed for a year and drivers under 25 must take a safety training course.
Rob Stomphorst, a spokesman for road safety organization Safe Traffic the Netherlands, says four people died in recent weeks in crashes involving Dutch Uber cars. He says the circumstances of the crashes remain under investigation. The organization is planning to work with Uber to develop safety training.
General manager of Uber Nederland, Thijs Emondts, said:
“That is why we are very upset at the recent traffic accidents in which a number of people have died,” he said, extending sympathy to family and friends of the victims.
“While we can’t establish a clear link between the accidents, we are determined to learn from them and to improve the safety of all people in the traffic,” he added.
Uber taking these precautions is simply a good business practice and these policies probably should have been on the books in the first place.
