Netflix cancels The Punisher and Jessica Jones: Marvel says they’re down but not out

Marvel hasn’t had a very good past few months over at Netflix as the network canceled Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Daredevil, and The Defenders. That left many wondering what was going to happen to The Punisher and Jessica Jones. Well, we now know. The last remaining Marvel TV shows on Netflix have just gotten the cut.

While not every one of these shows were equally loved, they were all fairly well received, especially Daredevil, The Punisher, and Jessica Jones. For Jessica Jones fans, Netflix is still going to release the third season, so you have that to look forward to. And hopefully, we have some closure with that one.

Netflix, speaking to Deadline, had this to say about the canceling of the last two Marvel shows:

Marvel’s The Punisher will not return for a third season on Netflix,” Netflix confirmed today to Deadline. “Showrunner Steve Lightfoot, the terrific crew, and exceptional cast including star Jon Bernthal, delivered an acclaimed and compelling series for fans, and we are proud to showcase their work on Netflix for years to come,” the streamer added.

“In addition, in reviewing our Marvel programming, we have decided that the upcoming third season will also be the final season for Marvel’s Jessica Jones,” Netflix also made official this President’s Day. “We are grateful to showrunner Melissa Rosenberg, star Krysten Ritter and the entire cast and crew, for three incredible seasons of this groundbreaking series, which was recognized by the Peabody Awards among many others”.

“We are grateful to Marvel for five years of our fruitful partnership and thank the passionate fans who have followed these series from the beginning.”

Marvel did follow up this announcement with a statement of its own. The company thanked the teams that worked on the shows as well as the fans and others. More importantly, it’s what they closed the statement with that may give hope to fans of all of these shows.

Our Network partner may have decided they no longer want to continue telling the tales of these great characters… but you know Marvel better than that.

As Matthew Murdock’s Dad once said, “The measure of a man is not how he gets knocked to the mat, it’s how he gets back up.”

We certainly hope Marvel finds a home for some of these shows, in particular, The Punisher and Daredevil. With Hulu picking up some animated Marvel shows and Disney’s streaming service launching soon, there are definitely some options. It would be sad to see such great pieces of work just go abandoned. It’s a bummer Netflix cancels shows like this.
