We’ve seen the leaks and knew Joaquin Phoenix would be taking up the mantel but until now, we hadn’t had any official JOKER footage until today. I’m probably not the first nor will I be the last to say that Phoenix has a huge hole to fill after Heath Ledger’s performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight.
It’s a valid point to make as most will agree that Ledger elevated the character to new heights. With that being said, I for one, am willing to give Phoenix at least a chance to show us what he’s got. That’s a gamble for the studio as Phoenix’s performance could easily make or break the entire movie.
Then there is the issue of DC movies in general. I think most will agree that the DC movie universe is far behind that of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Part of the problem I see with DC movies is the lack of cohesiveness between films. Marvel has done an excellent job of tying their movies together into a larger story. While DC’s offerings tend to feel more like one off films. Even the Justice League didn’t feel as if it belonged, maybe that’s just me.
I’ll stop there for a minute and let you, the viewer, watch the JOKER teaser trailer below:
Don’t get me wrong, DC has had some good films including Wonder Woman, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, and Aquaman was okay. Actually, Aquaman would have been really great if not for the Power Ranger moments during the Black Manta fight scene, awful to say the least.
I am, at least, willing to give JOKER a fair shake. But DC really needs to get their stuff together and start weaving a larger interconnected story with these movies. I think it would benefit their brand as well as the franchise of movies. JOKER opens October 4th 2019 in theaters nationwide.
