Smart clocks and screens with digital assistants are definitely here to stay. The good thing about most of them is that they continue to get updates after you’ve purchased them, bringing new features and functionality.

We reviewed the Lenovo Smart Clock with Google Assistant earlier this year and were impressed with its features as shipped. In fact, it earned a Top Pick of 2019 Award here at Techaeris.

“If you’re looking for Google Assistant functionality in the bedroom, the Lenovo Smart Clock is definitely a fantastic choice given its size and functionality. Sure, you’re missing some features that other smart displays boast like a camera and YouTube video playback, but honestly, not everyone wants that functionality in the bedroom.

“At the end of the day, the Lenovo Smart Clock does what it’s supposed to on the clock/alarm/Google Assistant front. For these reasons and more, it easily earns a Top Pick of 2019 Award here at Techaeris.”

The device is getting another update, courtesy of Google, which brings a new machine learning Impromptu alarm option.

While you can currently set a number of different ringtones or a playlist to wake up to when your alarm goes off, Impromptu uses Google’s Magenta open source project to mix things up a bit. The machine learning technology will pick a ringtone that it thinks best fits your situation. The ringtone will vary based on the time of day your alarm is set to go off, as well as the weather.

In addition to the Impromptu alarm option, the Lenovo Smart Clock is also getting other improvements including tweaks to automatic brightness, music recommendation cards, and more control over how long your alarm lasts before it turns off.

If you’re looking for a last-minute gift for that special someone, you can’t go wrong with the Lenovo Smart Clock, currently selling for as low as US$53 on Amazon.
