Many games have been shipping with or getting a battle royale mode, however, there are a few genres that you’d think wouldn’t be included that list. As it turns out, Forza Horizon 4 is getting a free battle royale mode called The Eliminator.

UPDATED (12/12/2019): The Eliminator mode has its own mini-campaign and also gives players the chance to unlock rewards for players to unlock including the exclusive 2008 Renault Mégane R26.R, the 2016 Porsche 911 GT3 RS Pre-Order Edition, and the 1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator, as well as The Eliminator-branded character clothing.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE:

Battle royale modes vary by game and genre, of course. In the Forza Horizon 4 version, The Eliminator pits 72 players against each other.

“The Eliminator invites up to 72 players to face-off within an arena set in the open world of Britain. Eliminating one another in head-to-head races to earn upgrades and a chance to pick up faster cars. Arena walls contract throughout the game, forcing players closer together until a final white-knuckle race among the survivors determines the winner.”

Playground Games

According to IGN, each player starts off with the 1965 Mini Cooper and can upgrade by hitting up random air drops or by winning head-to-head races against opponents. As the arena zone shrinks — a necessary game mechanic for battle royales — head-to-head races allow players to eliminate an opponent and claim an upgrade, or the loser’s car. Once the final zone size is reached, a marker appears on the map and the first one to reach it wins with the rest being eliminated.

The Eliminator mode isn’t something that was just cobbled together recently either. According to Mike Brown, Playground Games’ principal game designer, the idea of a battle royale vehicle mode was kicked around even before Forza Horizon 4 was released.

“It wasn’t even a prototype; we were really just playing it with our imagination before Horizon 4 even came out. It started as a game that we were playing amongst ourselves where we were just doing head-to-head [races] within the world, and every time you lost a head-to-head the other person would change car, and it kind of blossomed from there into The Eliminator game mode we have today.”
