Twitter founder Jack Dorsey is working on a new project called Bluesky Social. The project is not yet ready for mass use, but it is now available in closed beta on the Apple App Store. You’ll have to drop your email address in to be considered for the beta. Bluesky Social is yet another app looking to draw Twitter users away from the platform.

If you’re unaware of the drama that has ensued over Elon Musk purchasing Twitter, be grateful for your ignorance. The entire thing has become a tribal war, and many normal Twitter users are caught in the crossfire. Bluesky is the latest shot fired, and this time it’s being fired by Twitter’s founder Jack Dorsey. Okay, that’s not entirely fair, as Dorsey started the project in 2019 and is finally moving forward with it. I suppose it’s just interesting timing.

Reports indicate that the Bluesky will look familiar to Twitter users as it uses a similar aesthetic. There is some difference in naming schemes of features, and supposedly the process of creating posts is more straightforward, but we won’t know that until we have our hands on it.

Bluesky began in 2019 as a Twitter-funded side project. Dorsey, who co-founded Twitter and was still CEO when the initiative started, saw it as a more open alternative to an increasingly centralized Twitter. Then, Bluesky spun off as its own company in 2021. Dorsey has said he believes social media should be free of corporate or government control and that only authors should have the power to remove their social-media content. Additionally, although he said Twitter’s decision to ban Donald Trump after his role in inciting the January 6th insurrection was “the right decision,” he also worried about its precedent in endangering a “free and open global internet.”

It will be interesting to see what Bluesky Social will offer users to get them to move from Twitter. While Mastodon has been an option for some, it’s evident that it’s not the same experience as Twitter and leaves much to be desired. Sign up for Bluesky Social within the app or on their website here.
