The 2016 Oscar nominations were announced this morning by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and as usual features a few surprises alongside the expected nods. The Revenant earned a whopping 12 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor, while George Miller’s Mad Max reboot earned 10 nominations including Best Picture, and Best Director.
Some notable exclusions from this year’s list include Ridley Scott for directing The Martian which received nods for Best Picture and Best Actor by Matt Damon, as well as Steven Spielberg for Bridge of Spies which also earned a nomination for Best Picture. A hashtag is already making the rounds on social media, #OscarsSoWhite, after not one minority actor was recognized with nominations. There were plenty of outstanding performances this year by the likes of Ryan Coogler in Creed and Will Smith in Concussion, and F. Gary Gray’s directing of Straight Outta Compton was passed over as well.
Check out the complete list of 2016 Oscar nominations for the awards show below and let us know what you think of the nominations and who you think shouldn’t have been snubbed this year in the comments, or on Google+, Twitter, or Facebook. The 88th Academy Awards ceremony airs on Sunday, February 28, 2016 on ABC and is set to be hosted by Chris Rock.
