R.I.U. Star Patrol threatens DDoS attacks on Xbox and Playstation Christmas Day

Merry Christmas! If you’re planning on planting yourself in front of your Xbox or PlayStation this Christmas you should know there is a possibility those services may go down. Hacking group R.I.U. Star Patrol is threatening to issue a DDoS attack on both networks over Christmas Day, though they did leave the threat open-ended. R.I.U. Star Patrol was able to perform a successful DDoS attack against Tumblr, which took the social media site down on Wednesday for a few hours.

Gaming news site 7421Max interviewed the hacking group @StarPatrolling. The hackers told the news site that they plan to launch coordinated attacks against Xbox on Christmas day. When asked about their motive, the hackers said: “We do it because we can.”

“We have not been paid a single dollar for what we do,” one of the hackers said.

Last week, 7421Max reported that the hacking group had shut down League of Legends and Warframe servers. On Twitter, they issued a threat to knock down PSN and Xbox Live for Christmas.

The Lizard Squad has also been known to target Xbox Live and PlayStation networks in the past, bringing both sites down over the holidays. As you can read in the quote above, there’s no specific reason for the planned DDoS attack, they just do it because they can. So this is just a head’s up if you’re playing your favorite Xbox Live game and you lose your connection, it could very well be because Star Patrol is initiating its planned DDoS attack.
