Biblical Epic Exodus: Gods and Kings Gets An Equally Epic Trailer

|

Ridley Scott’s upcoming biblical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings rolled out a befittingly epic trailer this week. The film stars Christian Bale as Moses, Sir Ben Kingley, Sigourney Weaver, Joel Edgerton as Ramses, John Turturro, Aaron Paul and others.

Check out the epicness:

The film is already riddled with controversy. As you might have noticed Exodus is a story about Egypt as described in the Bible, and yet all the actors seem to be white. Scott has been facing a lot of backlash for what critics call “white-washing”, meaning that he’s taking a story set in Egypt but is casting predominantly white people. For historical accuracy’s sake, you’d expect to see people of color. It’s definitely a sensitive subject and Scott addressed the controversy indirectly when he was talking casting with Yahoo! Austrailia:

Egypt was — as it is now — a confluence of cultures, as a result of being a crossroads geographically between Africa, the Middle East and Europe. We cast major actors from different ethnicities to reflect this diversity of culture, from Iranians to Spaniards to Arabs. There are many different theories about the ethnicity of the Egyptian people, and we had a lot of discussions about how to best represent the culture.

From the preview, it looks like Scott’s take on a Bible story might be a little more appealing than the recent Noah as far as as a Christian/Jewish-centric audience point of view. Both films are part of a trend in Hollywood featuring stories meant to entice this normally conservative portion of movie going audience into heading to the movies.

Exodus: Gods and Kings is set to release in theaters this coming December.
