Isaac Asimov’s Foundation Trilogy Being Adapted As HBO Series

According to The Wrap, Warner Bros. TV and HBO are joining forces to create a television series based off of the famous Foundation trilogy by Isaac Asimov. The series is to be written and produced by Jonathan Nolan who is most known for his work with The Dark Knight (2008), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), and his most recent box office hit Interstellar (2014), which grossed almost $50 million this past weekend.

Currently working on the HBO series Westworld starring Anthony Hopkins, James Marsden, Evan Rachel Wood, and Ed Harris, Nolan has reportedly be developing the Foundation project in secret since HBO acquired the rights to the property early this summer. In a recent interview with Indiewire, when asked what piece of science fiction he loved but didn’t think enough people knew about, he cited Asimov’s Foundation series and seemingly hinted at the then under-wraps project:

Well, I f***ing love the ‘Foundation’ novels by Isaac Asimov. They’re certainly not well-known, but that’s a set of books I think everyone would benefit from reading. That’s a set of books where the influence they have is just f***ing massive. They have many imitators and many have been inspired by them, but go back and read those, and there are some ideas in those that’ll set your f***ing hair on fire

The Foundation series originally began as a trilogy – Foundation, Foundation and Empire, and Second Foundation – which all followed the path of mathematician Hari Seldon’s lifelong pursuit of a very advanced level of mathematical sociology called psychohistory. Utilizing the laws of mass action, Seldon predicts the future on a grand scale with his self-developed methodology, including the fall of the Galactic Empire and the following dark age that lasts 30 thousand years before a second empire emerges. In order to minimize the damage, Seldon finds an alternative that will only let the dark age happen for a thousand years and implements a foundation of the worlds most talented engineers and artisans to become the foundation for the new galactic empire.

After the Foundation series won the Hugo Award for “Best All-Time Series” in 1966, Asimov added two sequels in 1981 – Foundation’s Edge, Foundation and Earth – and two prequels – Prelude to Foundation, and Forward the Foundation. Asimov had two other series – Robots and Empire, which had events referenced in the Foundation series indicating that they all seemed to take place in the same fictional universe.
