N64 And Nintendo DS Games Available Now On Wii U Virtual Console

It was announced during today’s Nintendo Direct that N64 and Nintendo DS games will finally be making their way to the Wii U Virtual Console. Releasing today are two games, Super Mario 64 and Yoshi’s Island DS, with more coming in the near future.

While N64 games have been on the Wii virtual console for years now, fans have been anxiously awaiting their debut on the Wii U. You will be able to play each game on the TV or on the GamePad alone, of course, but one of the more interesting features is the ability to customize the controller layout.

As for Nintendo DS games, some of the games will have the top screen displayed on your TV, and the bottom displayed on the GamePad, and some will display both of the DS screens on one screen. You will have the option to choose which layout you use, and you can even turn your Wii U GamePad horizontally so it splits the screen that way.

Super Mario 64 and Yoshi’s Island DS will be available sometime today for $9.99 each, but you’ll have to wait a while to get your hands on Donkey Kong 64, Paper Mario, and Mario Kart DS, and others. If you’ve already purchased any of these N64 games on the Wii virtual console and wish to dump that cumbersome UI once and for all, transferring a game from the Wii virtual console over to the Wii U can be done for $2.
