Apple can be stubborn sometimes when it comes to their designs, they feel what they have created is to perfection and everyone else should feel the same. But that has not been the case with the Apple TV remote control. The teenie weenie aluminum remote is the bane of every Apple TV user. It’s so damn small you lose the thing constantly and typing in anything to the search box takes forever – it’s everything Apple says they aren’t. Sure you can use the Apple Remote on the app store but not everyone wants to. It seems Apple has finally come to its senses and seen the error of their remote ways. Rumor has it that Apple will be revamping the Apple TV remote and making it into a touch interface. The remote will be thicker and have two buttons along with the touch interface, which I am assuming means an onscreen keyboard.
Last fall, a patent application suggested a modernized Apple TV remote with customization features. The Chromecast-like invention would allow users to tap an icon to stream and control content from their device to the TV. Not everything Apple patents comes to market, though.
With the recent price drop of the current Apple TV it’s probably a good bet that Apple is going to refresh the box and some say that is going to be coming to WWDC this year. The new remote is likely going to debut there with the new box which is supposed to have new features and hardware. Even if the box isn’t getting a refresh, just getting a new remote is good enough for a lot of Apple TV users. The old design never was anything to write home about and it’s good riddance in my opinion.
