Sinister Six Movie Still A Possibility

In spite of the fact that Sony’s recent deal with Marvel Studios brings Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the deal has sent other films into limbo but it looks like a Sinister Six movie is still in the cards. According to writer and director Drew Goddard, the plans for the super villain team up have not been completely abandoned.

The agreement struck between Marvel and Sony was constructed to not only bring Peter Parker into the same universe as Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, it also called for yet another reboot of the Spider-Man franchise. That move put plans for The Amazing Spider-Man spin-offs – The Sinister Six and Venom – on hold for the foreseeable future.

Although plans are currently on the back burner, Cabin In The Woods director Drew Goddard, who was originally scheduled to write and direct the spin-off, has not given up hope. Originally scheduled for a November 2016 release, the future of The Sinister Six is now uncertain, but Goddard says he’s still interested in making the movie if Marvel wants it.

“My vision of that movie was a summer annual,” Goddard said in an interview with io9. “So you didn’t have to worry about continuity. It was just, ‘We take Peter, put him on an adventure, we put him back in his life.’ I intentionally wanted a movie that didn’t have to worry about mythology and continuity. It was important to me to make a movie that could stand on its own. So the good news is, you know, [laughs], it slots in very well to any plan anybody ever wants. We just need to let a couple years go by, I think.”

If the heads at Marvel are in fact still interested in the film, Goddard still appears to be in the studio’s good graces, as he is still attached to produce their Netflix series Daredevil.

Although he believes that his film could exist independently of a Spider-Man Franchise surrounding it, Goddard understands why the sudden change of plans for The Sinister Six‘s future put his plans on hold. In fact, he is actually behind the idea of integrating the wise-cracking webslinger into The Avengers.

“The tricky part about all this is I love this plan,” Goddard said. “I love that you get to see Spider-Man in Marvel movies. I think that’s a great thing. I’m on board with that decision because as a fan that’s what I want. So who knows what the future holds? This is Hollywood, man, you’ve gotta play the long game.”

In the interim, Goddard seems to be keeping himself busy with promoting The Martian and working on the upcoming season of Daredevil.
