The Martian Makes $2.5 Million On Preview Thursday

Comics/Books / Entertainment / Movies

If Thursday earnings are anything to go by, Ridley Scott’s The Martian is well on its way to breaking Hollywood’s Mars curse. It will also almost certainly sustain, if not up, the momentum space movies have gathered in the last few years.

Starting off at about 2,800 locations, The Martian has made a $2.5 million preview loot, the best since Straight Out Of Compton made $4.9 million the Thursday it came out. A strong start puts the movie well on its way to top of the weekend charts. It’s also resulted in enhanced debut projections, with The Hollywood Reporter upping the number from $40 million to $45-50 million.

Besides filling the coffers, the ambitious sci-fi space adventure has also managed to keep the critics happy. First reviews have all generally been positive. Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 93% Fresh grade. The movie will be playing at around 3,600 locations across North America weekend onwards.

Ridely Scott’s last two movies – The Counselor and Exodus: Gods and Kings, were earth-based and opened to underwhelming numbers. His last space movie, Prometheus, may not have been a hit with critics across the board, but managed to rake in $51 million opening weekend.

The Martian is a space survival story based on a book by Andy Weir. It stars Matt Damon as astronaut Mark Watney supported by Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jessica Chastain, Sean Bean, Michael Pena, Kate Mara, Donald Glover, and Kristen Wiig.

Vying to steal some of The Martian’s thunder this weekend is Sicario. The cartel drama stars Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro, and Emily Blunt. Philippe Petit’s biopic The Walk directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt opens at 440 IMax locations this weekend. Despite both getting promising reactions, they’re unlikely to be able to make a serious run at top spot against The Martian this weekend.
