In the vein of the Holiday spirit that has virtually taken over North America, Netflix presented us with what’s New On Netflix U.S. for the month of January earlier than usual. Compared to the past couple of months, January is considerably light on original content, but the high quality of movies and TV shows being added to the roster more than makes up for that. Unfortunately the additions come with the subtractions of major films like Rocky, Mission: Impossible and Gladiator, but on the plus side, Dance Moms is leaving as well.  If you use Netflix Canada, be sure to check out our New on Netflix Canada list for January.

Netflix Originals

While the quantity of originals is much lesser than in the closing months of 2015, the quality will remain the same.

The main course of Netflix’s offering of content this month is Degrassi: The Next Class. The latest version of the internationally popular Canadian drama franchise comes to Netflix on January 15 and follows another group of high school students facing the issues of the modern day.

A pair of comedians are set to bring the laughs this month as Tom Segura’s stand up special Mostly Stories debuts on January 8, while former TV host Chelsea Handler brings her four-part documentary series Chelsea Does on January 23.

Netflix Original Series For Kids

The kids won’t be without entertainment to help cure their post-holiday hangover, since Netflix has a pair of original seasons children’s shows to add.

The first of which being the second season of Dreamworks’ Dragons: Race To The Edge, which is available for streaming on January 8. This spin-off of the wildly popular How To Train Your Dragon series takes Hiccup and Toothless to the edge of adventure.

Ever After High: Dragon Games will have its fourth season available for streaming on January 29. In the animated series, the kids of fairytale characters attend a school with two cliques: those who accept their fairy-tale destinies and those who want to write their own.

Exclusively On Netflix

Coming exclusively to Netflix is the Oscar hopeful short documentary film The Testimony that follows the massive conflict in the Republic of the Congo following the M23 Rebellion, which has cost more lives than any other following World War II. This hits the streams on January 14

Also arriving exclusively is Occupied, a multi-layered political suspense thriller set in a not so distant future where Russia, on behalf of EU, has staged a “silk-glove” invasion of Norway, who has stopped production of oil for climate reasons. It becomes available January 15.
