Google Cardboard, The cheap VR headset for your smart phone has been launched on the Google Store today for the UK, France, Canada and Germany. Google Cardboard was supposed to bring Virtual Reality to the masses, But the search giant has been cautious about releasing their own official viewers. The US only got the official viewers from Google in February.

Google Cardboard was available before today in the UK and elsewhere via third party viewers on sale on Amazon and other websites. The issue with this is when a second version of Google Cardboard was announced at Google I/O in 2015, which offered Google Cardboard to larger screen phones. It took a while for third party companies to create viewers with the same specification as the second version.

Google Offering

The Official Google Cardboard is on offer at the Google Store for £15 or a pack of two for £25. The official viewer is the typical colour of cardboard. If you want a different coloured version, you’d best look elsewhere for viewers from the likes of dudocase and I AM cardboard, which are all available through the Google Store.  It doesn’t look like the two other VR viewers Google sells in the US (Mattel’s View Master, and the Goggle Tech C1) are available in the new locations. It’s good to see more options reaching more places.

Can Google compete?

Google Cardboard is supposed to provide us with a cheap, bargain basement VR experience, which it does quite well. VR experiments such as 360 YouTube videos and applications from the likes of Star Wars bring Virtual Reality to Android. The Cardboard viewer can be used with iPhones also, which brings Google’s VR to an even bigger market.

Google Cardboard is a good stepping stone into Virtual Reality, with a lot of devices such as the Oculus Rift, Samsung VR, HTC Vive, and others costing hundreds of pounds.  The Cardboard viewer is the device for you if you are unsure on the recent VR phenomenon from the tech world. Lets say at the price of the viewer, its a great buy.
