Microsoft really wants you to upgrade your old Windows OS to Windows 10. They want it so badly they’re willing to give you a free laptop to get you to upgrade. But wait a minute there are, of course, caveats to this. You have to bring your current “fully functional” Windows 8 laptop to a physical Microsoft Store to get the deal. But it doesn’t end there. Before you can snag a free laptop you’ll have to agree to let Microsoft attempt to install Windows 10 on your current laptop. Of course if they’re successful and everything works, you’ll go home with a fresh Windows 10 install and not a free laptop.
But if your old laptop doesn’t make it through the install, you’ll walk away with a new Dell Inspiron 15. Microsoft hasn’t given out the specs of the machine they’re offering but it’s likely going to be a lower end machine. Before you start jumping in the car with your old laptop in hand be sure to read the disclaimer though.
“To be eligible for trade-in, you must own the qualifying device, device must power on, battery must hold charge and not be required to be plugged in to operate, and be in fully functional, working condition without broken/missing components, cracked display/housing, liquid damage, modification(s) or have device warranty seal broken to be considered working.”
You have to have your computer into the Microsoft store before noon in order for Microsoft techs to work on it. Windows 7 computers are not eligible for this offer but Microsoft will still offer $150 towards a new computer when you recycle an old one. Just a friendly reminder, Microsoft’s free Windows 10 upgrade offer ends July 29th. If you don’t upgrade, you’ll have to buy Windows 10 at a later date.
