CES 2018 is over and Samsung’s 146″ MicroLED TV (The Wall) is still on the tips of our tounges. Now a new report says Samsung has filed for trademarks on Micro QLED and 8K QLED. To some, this suggests that Samsung could be ready to market and sell something akin to The Wall sooner than some expected. Many have speculated that Samsung’s showing of The Wall at CES was more concept than reality. So it will be interesting to see what Samsung’s intent with MicroLED and Micro QLED really is.

Tech site Let’s Go Digital uncovered the trademark applications which were filed with the Korean Intellectual Property Office on January 11, 2018.

When asked by a South Korean news outlet about the trademark applications, a Samsung spokesperson brushed it off saying:

“I have never heard about Micro QLED. As you know, filing a trademark doesn’t necessarily mean a product will be launched anytime soon. We’ll see.”

Samsung’s intent for trademarking 8k QLED is pretty clear considering the 8K AI tech that supposedly upscales any video content to 8K. They even introduced the Samsung Q9S 85″ 8K QLED TV which includes this new AI upscaling technology. Thier trademarking of Micro QLED on the other hand, that’s still not clear.

According to industry experts, MicroLED technology is pretty expensive and is likely out of reach of most consumers. Perhaps Samsung has found a way to blend MicroLED and QLED technology in a way that is consumer friendly? At this point, we can only speculate. My guess is Samsung could start marketing Micro QLED TV’s sometime in spring or early summer if the technology is ready to go.

What do you think of Samsung’s 8K QLED TV AI technology? What do you think they’re going to do with MicroLED and Mirco QLED? Let us know in the comments below or on Google+, Twitter, or Facebook.
