X-O Manowar #17 review: One flashback too many

Here we are with our second comic book review of the week and, unfortunately, this week’s offerings leave much to be desired.  X-O Manowar #17 continues the flashback arc. Yep, this is the third issue of flashbacks.

However in this issue, we get no Aric in his armor, we get no spectacular heroics, we get nothing that has anything to do with Harbinger Wars 2, which is why the armor is supposedly reminding Aric of these flashbacks. Should he go back to Earth to help? Well… obviously he does because he is in that “event.” Yet we have to pay up for 3 issues (looks like 4 because I think the next issue concludes this arc) of flashbacks.

X-O Manowar #17The art by Trevor Hairsine & Ryan Bodenheim looks great, I wonder what they could do with a fully powered X-O in armor and doing his thing? Writer Matt Kindt, I think, is out of ideas on X-O at this point. I generally like Matt Kindt’s writing, but I’d really rather a new writer take control and do something interesting with the character because currently, it’s just not happening. I don’t care about tales of Aric and Sabbas in ancient Rome. When Sabbas is telling Aric of his journey, and Aric is asleep and snoring, that’s exactly how I feel about this entire arc. I’m just bored by it.

Wrap Up

This series of X-O Manowar has had its ups and downs but at this point, I think I’m going to remove it from my subscription list. Maybe I’ll pick these issues up during a comiXology sale or something, but I’m tired of paying $3.99 per issue when nothing is happening. The value is just not there right now.
