Mobile World Congress is well on its way and we’ve seen foldable phones, wearable phones, and 1TB microSD card announcements. Now it’s time for some software announcements. McAfee has announced it is extending its “partnership” with Samsung and it will come pre-installed on Galaxy S10 smartphones.

I know you’re all excited about having some additional software bloatware added to your very expensive handheld computer. The Galaxy S10 smartphones met with some high praise when they were announced at Unpacked San Francisco, there’s a lot to like about them. But this announcement just might sour some folks on purchasing one of the handsets due to the added software.

Here’s a portion of McAfee’s press release and announcement of the extended partnership with Samsung.

“Due to the growing threat landscape and expansion of the attack surface, it’s more important than ever that consumers protect not only traditional devices like smartphones, PCs and laptops, but also connected home devices, such as Smart TVs. By working together with Samsung to provide comprehensive cross-device protection, we’re delivering essential security protection to more than 500 million customers, giving them the confidence they need to protect what matters.”

Terry Hicks, executive vice president, consumer business group, McAfee

But let’s not stop with smartphones. McAfee already has a contract with Samsung for its PC’s and had extended that as well. But it gets better… McAfee will now come pre-installed on your Samsung Smart TV.

McAfee extended its contract to have McAfee Security for TV technology pre-installed on all Samsung Smart TVs produced in 2019. Along with being the market leader in the Smart TV category worldwide, Samsung is also the first company to pre-install security on these devices, underscoring its commitment to building security in from the start. McAfee Security for TV scans the apps that run on Samsung smart TVs to identify and remove malware.

McAfee Press Release

I’m just not sure why on earth Samsung would agree to add bloatware to its ecosystem like this. I really enjoy Samsung products, from their Galaxy phones to their Smart TVs but, from a consumer perspective, this is a questionable partnership.
