Ask For Mercy is a new monthly that is a comiXology original. It can be bought in digital format or read for free with a comiXology Unlimited subscription.

Written by: Richard Starkings with art by Abigail Jill Harding

Ask For MercyI saw this one while scrolling through the ComiXology app. The cover of number 2 looked interesting, so I borrowed and downloaded both #1 and #2 and then read them in order. I’m glad I did, too. This is the type of book that comiXology needs in order to get more people reading digital and subscribing to the Unlimited service. This is the type of book that I would not have been surprised to find under the Image imprint. In other words, comiXology scored on this one.

Mercy is a Realtor who has been seeing a gate. When a strange man in a suit talks her into going through that gate, she finds herself in the past, being shot at by Nazi’s (who are monsters), and in the company of friendly monsters who are testing her. In fact, Mercy has been chosen to join the monsters to fight the Nazi Monsters. Mercy has a power, and you get that she’s more than capable of harnessing whatever it is and using it. In fact, that’s what I really like about her character. She doesn’t know what is going on, but she has a self-assurance about her and you can believe that she really does have some sort of power. It’s a really good characterization.

The art is beautiful and suits the mood of the book perfectly. Just looking at the pages of panels takes you away to this past time where you can feel this world taking shape around you. I really can’t say enough about the art. I can’t wait to see even more from Abigail Jill Harding.

Wrap Up

Read this book. It’s just kicking off, and so far, with just two issues out, I want more. The story has that occult-horror feel to it while the images create the mood. Together they both pull you in. It’s a gem of a book that I’m happy to have stumbled across. comiXology better keep this one coming!
