Could this be the foldable Moto Razr and will we see it in 2019?

One of our loyal readers once pointed out Betteridge’s Law to me which states: “Any headline that ends in a question mark can be answered by the word no.” Of course, Betteridge’s Law wasn’t intended to be the literal truth but rather a bit of humor for a good laugh. Which brings us to the question at hand.

Could this Moto Razr leak be the anticipated folding clamshell smartphone that has been rumored? Could we actually see this in the hands of consumers in 2019? There are a load of questions we all have that we’re not likely going to get the answer to anytime soon.

Given that the Samsung Galaxy Fold has been experiencing some pretty significant issues, perhaps folding phones aren’t ready for prime time in 2019. We know that glass cannot be bent and flexed and therefore cannot be used in these folding displays. This leaves OEM’s with alternatives like plastics and polymers.

But just about any material is going to have its issues, like stress from repeated opening and closing. Hinges also have gaps that could allow small pieces of debris under the plastic panel damaging the underside of the display. These are just a few of the issues Samsung has faced and some of the reasons its delayed its Galaxy Fold launch.

The leaked images of this new Moto Razr, which have been removed from Weibo, show a clamshell smartphone that is almost a dead ringer for the original Moto Razr phone. None of the photos can be confirmed as legit so for now, this could just be another fan rendering that was leaked as the real deal.

We do know that Motorola is working on a foldable phone and that they do have patents for such a device, and while these renders look promising, it’s still not 100% proof the Moto Razr foldable smartphone exists. The Samsung Galaxy Fold, while suffering a significant setback, is an important first step towards the foldable smart device and I do think Motorola will eventually showcase their offering. Whether or not it looks like these photos is another matter.
