Google Glass: The Tech You Love To Hate(?)

Google_Glass_wearer

Tax Day (4.15.14) was the day to become a Glasshole part of Google’s Glass Explorer program.  For a mere $1500 any one was  able to purchase Glassware without an invite from The Goog.  The Explorer Bundle included a Glass headset, frames (optional), a mono earbud, your choice of sunglass frame, charger and a pouch.   Because most of us tech geeks already wear regular glasses, Google has made very basic hipster-like frames (offered for free yesterday,  regular retail cost *read: what I paid* $225), with a special cut out for the Glass head set.  Lenses for these frames can be ordered by searching through Google’s Preferred Provider Network of eyecare professionals.  These providers will custom fit your Glassware to your frames  enhancing your experience (Glass lenses are only available at a prescription up to +/-4).  There is also an option  (in NY or LA) to go to a Glass Boutique and have your Glassware fitted professionally which includes a short tutorial on all that things your new tech can do.

Impulse-8

Review: STM Impulse Medium Laptop Backpack

Impulse-8

While out at CES this past January I ran into STM, a company that makes bags, backpacks and cases for laptops, tablets and phones. STM was a sponsor of one of the press events in Vegas that week. They were kind enough to send me one of their Impulse laptop backpacks so I could test and review it here for you. We had a great time talking and meeting with STM while at CES, so let’s get to the review.

The TRANSFORM Table, A First Step To A Real Holodeck?

TRANSFORM-Holodeck

Discovery News is billing the TRANSFORM table as a possible first step into Holodeck technology. For those of you who have no idea what I am talking about, let’s clarify what a Holodeck is and where it comes from. The Holodeck is an immersive virtual reality simulation program used on Star Trek. The Holodeck was used for training purposes but it could be used for recreational purposes as well. Unlike the VR we know today, the Holodeck was not only imagery, it had a physical sense to it as well, meaning you could interact with your surroundings physically. For example, if you were in a boat you could actually touch the water the boat was floating on. The Holodeck is one of Star Trek fans favorite pieces of technology, well certainly one of mine anyway.

HTC Dot View Case Front Off

My View On The Dot View: HTC’s Case For The One M8

HTC Dot View Case Front Off

I’ll  be honest. I am not a huge fan of cases. When I buy a phone I don’t want anything to add to the bulk of that phone. Every now and then I will flirt with cases. I will buy them, use them, stop using them, etc. For the most part I just end up not using them. Sometimes my feelings on a case depend on the case and the device. Some devices are so ugly that they demand a case (I’m looking at you G2.) Some devices are so pedestrian that cases add excitement but I still fall back into that hatred of extra bulk. Then there are devices that are so beautiful that it almost seems criminal to put a case on them. Last year’s HTC One fell into that last camp and this year’s HTC One (M8) falls into that camp even more.

Business Insider is reporting that Apple is currently negotiating with the major carriers for a $100 price increase on the iPhone 6. All the leaked information and images have pointed to Apple increasing the size of the iPhone to 4.7″ and possibly a second 5.5″ version. We’re not really sure why Apple is pushing for such a price increase other than manufacturing costs and the use of sapphire displays.

Do Sales People Really Help You Make The Right Choice, Or Just The Popular One?

Do Sales People Really Help You Make The Right Choice

To me, choosing a smartphone is much like selecting the next car you want to buy. It has to look good to you and feel right in every way if you’re going to spend your hard earned money. Even if you have a decent amount of knowledge, you want the sales person to help you make a decision partly based on information he or she might have that you do not as yet. If that person does not possess the knowledge needed to convey all the pertinent information to you it’s possible you might drive off the lot with something you might regret later. The same can be true of shopping for a smartphone.

Atari 2600 Wood 4Sw Set 2

Throwback Thursday

SONY DSC

I stopped at a convenience store and I noticed all of the soda bottles looking old-school with labels that read “throwback.”  Retro seems to be the big thing now. Let’s make all the new stuff look like the old stuff but still have the same functionality as the new stuff and yet charge more for the new stuff that looks like the old stuff. (yes, that sentence totally made sense…just read it again).

The latter is what has happened with MagBak and its iPad Air mount. This thing got funded quickly and it continues to gain support. The MagBak is a magnetic mount for your iPad Air that is super functional and super portable.

Roku 1

Review: Roku Streaming Stick (HDMI Version)

Roku-1

Odds are pretty good that you’ve heard of Roku, even if you don’t own one. Roku is one of the most popular streaming set-top box makers in the world, bringing high definition video entertainment directly into your living room almost exclusively via a small, square, purple box.

The times are always changing, and the latest craze is streaming dongles like the Google Chromecast.

Night Vision – Coming Soon To Contact Lenses

night_vision_contact_lense

Night vision devices have played a part in any number of movies, tv shows, and video games as well as their prominent use in real life – mainly by the military and law enforcement.  One thing has always been true of these devices: they’ve always been fairly big and bulky.  The University of Michigan is looking to change all of that with a recent breakthrough in light detection.

Gaming Aggression – Failure Versus Violence

Gaming-rage-smashed-controller

We’ve all seen the headlines – Violent Video games Cause Aggression!  But what if they didn’t?  Video games and gaming in general have grown significantly in a relatively short amount of time.  It’s easy to see how games, and the people that play them can be misunderstood.  The University of Rochester has conducted a study and found that the cause of most aggression in gamers stems from their failure and frustration during gameplay, not the violent content of the games they play.

Windows-XP-Dead

Microsoft Windows XP Support Is Officially Dead

Today is the day folks. Today is the day Microsoft sticks the fork in its 12 year old operating system Windows XP. If you’re running a computer with Windows XP you will no longer be receiving any form of update to your OS. This WILL leave you open for even more malware, virus and trojan attacks. Now this doesn’t mean you can’t use your computer or its operating system, it just means you use it at your own risk. If you didn’t already know, there are some bad bad people out there looking to cause havoc and steal information. Now that XP is no longer supported, this leaves them free to find bugs and backdoors to exploit the operating system at will. It’s highly suggested that you upgrade to Windows 7 or find an alternative solution.

Amazon announced their new stream box, on Wednesday, beautifully named Fire TV.   For $99 this compact set-top box boasts a Qualcomm quad core CPU, 8GB of internal storage, 2GB of RAM and dual band, dual antenna WiFi (because no one likes waiting for their movies to buffer).  All you need is an HDMI cable and a high definition TV and you’re good to go!  According to Amazon the specs alone makes it roughly 3x faster than both Apple TV and the Roku 3.  Fire TV packs alot of…fire power (I know I know but I couldn’t resist).

Video Game Toothbrush Makes Brushing Fun!

Grushing-toothbrush

Kids are odd creatures. They wake up early on weekends but it’s close to impossible to get them up  during the week for school. They can’t memorize school work but they know the lyrics to every song from their favorite band. They think tomatoes are disgusting but love ketchup.  And the strangest thing…they HATE to brush their teeth.
