Facebook’s Chief Product Officer Apologizes For ‘Real Name’ Crackdown

In a (fittingly) Facebook post earlier today, Facebook’s Chief Product Officer, Chris Cox, offered a sincere apology for their implementation and recent stringent enforcement of their “real name” policy.  If you don’t remember, the accounts of quite a few drag queens, and other members of the LGBT community were flagged and banned due to the use of a stage name, or performance name rather than their real name.  For anyone who’s entire life exists as a pseudonym, this was an especially troubling move.  Conveniently, right around this same time, the “Anti-Facebook” Social Network Ello started popping up and happily accepting any and all who felt betrayed by Facebook (before going to an invite system due to increased popularity).  You can read Mr. Cox’s heart-felt response below.

Apple has had a rough couple of weeks.  iCloud was hacked, and celebrity photos were broadcast for all to see, the iPhone launch event was marred by the unfortunate decision to give everybody a free U2 album, millions of people don’t even have the new iPhone 6 in their hands yet, and those that do have found the build quality to be…lacking.  On top of that, they just released an update to iOS that changes the iPhone 6 into an iNotPhone 6.  Never let it be said that the Internet won’t smell blood in the water and go directly for the jugular, and over the last two days they’ve done just that.  Here are some of our favorite responses to the iPhone 6 Bendgate:

eBay Hit With Another Phishing Scam, User Credentials Compromised

Ebayheadquarters

It hasn’t been a good year for people wanting to keep their personal data safe. Facebook Can’t Buy Snapchat, Rips Off Their Features Instead

Snapchat is an ultra-popular photo sharing app that on the surface seems meant for sending temporary naughty pictures to one another.  You take your (presumably naughty) picture, set the (again, presumably naughty) picture’s expiration via Snapchat, and send the (horribly horribly naughty) picture to your friends/family/strangers/etc.  You may remember that just under a year ago, Facebook tried to purchase Snapchat for a cool $3 Billion in cash.  You may also remember that Snapchat turned them down.  Hard to believe that $3 Billion wouldn’t be enough, though maybe that was for the best, as Snapchat has recently received funding with a company valuation of right around $10 Billion.  It seems that Facebook hasn’t taken being spurned too hard though, as they’ve recently started testing a very Snapchat-ish feature for some iOS users – Self-destructing photos.

Google Disconnects Disconnect After Reconnecting Disconnect

Google-Disconnect-App
The Internet on your terms? Not so fast!

Someone can’t seem to make up their minds…. After first removing the privacy app Disconnect from the Play Store a few weeks ago, El Goog reversed course and reinstated the app a short time later.  Well, it seems some indecisiveness has returned, because mere hours after Disconnect was returned to the Play Store it’s once again been officially sacked. Are you following along so far?
