Reuters is reporting that Blackberry will be entering a deal with Amazon, Inc. to begin offering 240,000 Android apps through the Amazon App Store on newer Blackberry devices. The War Is Approaching: ComiXology, Amazon, Apple, and Payments

comixology Backwards

Last week ComiXology, a digital comic books distribution platform, made some changes in the way they do business. They uploaded a new app to the Apple App Store to replace the app that they have had up for some time. The changes that were made were not minimal. They stripped out the in app purchase (IAP) system that they had been using and put in a cloud syncing option so that users could log in to the Comixology.com website to make purchases and then sync them to the app. Unsurprisingly, some people were upset.

Top 10 Must-Have Chromecast Apps

It will come as no surprise to anyone who follows me on Techaeris when I say that I love the Google Chromecast. Earlier this year, I wrote an article as to whether the $35 dongle mattered and why; in short, I believe it matters because the proliferation of the device and an open SDK is helping Google create an industry standard for casting content to screens in a market where others have had either marginal success or failed.

Google Facing Potential Class Action Suit Over In-App Purchases

Google-Dollars

A mother has filed a class action complaint in California against Google over in-app purchases made by her son. The story begins with the mother buying a 99¢ game, Marvel Run Jump Smash, for her son. By buying the game, her Google account was left authenticated for 30-minutes (by design) so that in-app purchases would not require a password. In that 30-minute window, her son bought $65.95 in virtual in-game currency known as crystals.

Why You Should Use Telegram Instead of WhatsApp

When Facebook acquired popular messaging platform WhatsApp on February 19, 2014, for US$19 billion in shares, stock, and cash, two things happened: The Internet went crazy trying to figure out Facebook’s angle on the purchase, and millions of users began flocking to Telegram.

telegram

Founded in 2013 by brothers Nikolai and Pavel Durov, Telegram is a free, open source messaging app that focuses on maintaining maximum security for its users. It is available on both Android and iOS officially and Windows Phone, Windows, Linux, and Mac OSX unofficially for free; indeed, the company makes it plain on their website that “Telegram is free forever.

In an email sent out to imo users, the company has decided to discontinue support for third-party messaging services. The company says it wants to concentrate on strengthing its own services and effective March 3rd support for all others will terminate. With all of the available messaging services on the market it makes some sense that imo would want to focus on its own development. Although some users do enjoy having a place to concentrate all of their services in one place. We will see what user reaction is to this announcement, could go either way.  Read the full email after the break.

CNNMoney is reporting that Apple has pulled the plug on updates for OSX 10.6, better known as Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard was released in 2009 and it’s estimated to still be running on 19% of the world’s Apple computers. This really comes as no surprise as Apple has released three versions of OSX since, Lion, Mountain Lion and Mavericks. This really shouldn’t be an issue for most, as long as your Mac is a 2007 model or newer, you can just head over to the App Store and download and install OSX Mavericks for free. Upgrading to Mavericks is quick and painless and highly recommended to keep getting those security updates.

App Review: Learn A New Language With Duolingo

Duolingo_logo

The details of the English language are something that I have always been very good at, and consequently, I had always had an interest in other languages. Especially interesting to me is the language of my ancestors, specifically German. I had taken two German language courses in college, but had always found the pace too rapid to learn the language effectively. Sure, I’d gotten some key base knowledge down, but the courses weren’t at a pace that suited me.
