What If Apple Is Buying Beats For Its Demographics?

I have been scratching my head since I heard the rumors of Apple buying Beats and continuing to scratch it since it actually happened. The reasons flowing through the interwebs simply do not equate in my mind. On one hand, you have the camp that is firmly placing the purchase on Beats streaming music service, which hasn’t been all that successful.

Steve Ballmer Wins Bid For Los Angeles Clippers At $2 Billion

Steve Ballmer

The bidding war for the LA Clippers is over with Steve Ballmer coming out on top with the winning bid of $2 billion. I’d actually call this a better investment that the $3 billion that Tim Cook spent on Dr Dre and Beats, but I digress. Ballmer beat out other bidders that included Los Angeles-based investors Tony Ressler and Bruce Karsh and a group that included David Geffen and executives from the Guggenheim Group.

Springpad Shutting Down Users Have Until June 25th To Export Data

springpad

Springpad, an iOS and Android app much like Evernote has shut down and is giving users until June 25th to export their data or migrate it over to Evernote. The company says it cannot continue to be a self-sustaining business because funding is just not there. It’s sad to see competition die off like this but it’s the reality of the business world. Not every company will remain standing, there will be a select few left hopefully enough to leave the consumer some good choice. Read Springpad’s full announcement below.

Good news everybody!  The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) on Tuesday scored a huge victory against a shady Copyright Troll, and the DC Circuit Court of Appeals set precedent for rules that should hopefully limit the abilities of these trolls to operate in the future.  Boing Boing offers a description of these practices:

Origin recently started an “On the House” promotion, where they offer a game (or sometimes two) for free.  So far they have been older games, but still quality titles for free.  This month that trend continues with Battlefield 3 and Plants Vs. Zombies – Game of the Year Edition for the low, low price of Free!

Analyst Claims He Has Details About Apple’s Smartwatch

Apple-Smartwatch
courtesy pocket-lint.com

Let’s be clear here, until the fruit company makes an official announcement nothing any analyst or leakster says will hold water. That being said, Brian Blair of Rosenblatt Securities claims he has details about Apple’s possible smartwatch which he says come from a Taiwanese supply chain for Apple. I usually try to avoid articles like this but the source site is Pocket-lint and I had to laugh at the headline for their story (Apple iWatch details leak, said to look like the Moto 360). The reason Mr. Blair and Pocket-lint say the Apple smartwatch looks like the Moto 360? Because it is round. Yes it is round. Which kind of makes it look like a hundred different watches on the planet doesn’t it?

Google On Consistent Hunt To Optimize Data Center Performance

optimize-05468483-photo-google-datacenter

Love them or hate them, you have to give Google credit for trying to find ways to optimize the way they use energy. With a company as large as they are and with the amount of servers they use it’s important to both their bottom line and the environment that they make things run smoothly. Today they released a white paper detailing how they are using “machine learning” to optimize their energy use in data centers and drive consumption even lower.

Google Shows Off Its Prototype Self-Driving Car

Self-Driving-Google-Vehicle Prototype Image Banner Cropped 600px

In a blog post yesterday, Google showed off it’s prototype self-driving car with no steering wheel or gas and brake pedals. While the design is comical and cutesy it’s the technology underneath that which makes this a very cool project and should be on every tech nuts radar.

Kar Glass

My Glass, My Self: A Reflection of Intimidation

Kar-Glass

As a self-proclaimed geek, technology tends not to scare/intimidate/worry me.  I research prior to purchase, and once I buy the research intensifies (because tips and tricks are important) as does the hunt for accessories.  Wash, rinse, repeat.  But my routine needed to be altered when I received my invite to join the Google Glass Explorer program.  At first I was SUPER excited for the opportunity and found a way to afford the $1500 (not including accessories) price tag.  I was excited and I let that cloud my judgement and alter my regular tech requirement routine.  I didn’t finish my research prior to buying (the invite expired in 48hrs) but I did have questions and called the Glass helpline (they also extended my expiration date by 4 days).  While I did get some basic questions answered, I had no idea what I was in store for once I finally received my Glass.

Tesla Model X – Amazing, Yet Problematic Design

Tesla_Model_X_Design_Big

We here at Techaeris are very enthusiastic about Tesla Motors, and the exciting things they are doing to further the expansion of electric cars.  The Tesla Model S is right up at the top of our most-desired cars list – if you’re reading, we’d still love to review one, Tesla =) – and the design of the Tesla Model X is simply stunning.  Unfortunately, it seems that Tesla is having a few issues with the Model X’s most prominent feature – the rear “Falcon Wing” doors.

The Food and Drug Administration has recently approved the use of a highly advanced prosthetic arm for clinical use.  The DEKA arm – as mentioned in the source article – does certainly have some similarities to Luke Skywalker’s prosthetic in The Empire Strikes Back.  But probably the most exciting thing about the DARPA funded project is that it’s a huge step up from the most commonly available prosthetic arm.  Please keep reading for more information.

Blake’s Stage Of Rage: Lavabit, Secret Courts, And Trampled Freedom

American-Flag-Lavabit

As I write this have finished reading a write up at The Guardian by Ladar Levison the founder of Lavabit, an email service that gained notoriety for its use by Edward Snowden in the wake of Snowden’s NSA leaks. Lavabit’s mission was simple. Provide a source for email that was secure and encrypted. That is to say, the email service’s main goal was to keep those emails private. In this write up (which I implore you to read) Ladar talks about some of the details of his legal case that eventually lead to the closing of his business/service.

Surface Pro 3

Surface Pro 3 Gets Official, Actually Seems Pretty Sweet

Surface Pro 3
Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3

Today Microsoft announced the release of the Microsoft Surface Pro 3. For those living under a rock, the Surface Pro represents Microsoft’s vision of how tablets and laptops can occupy the same space and how Windows 8 as an operating system can handle different use cases. I suppose there are arguments to be made about the successes and failures of that vision but today breaks the mold, literally.  Today, Microsoft shows off the new Surface Pro 3, the first in the line of laplets (I just made that up, don’t hurt me) to deviate strongly from the original’s design.
